All descendants of Elijah Rodgers need to know that this family moved from Sevier county, Tennessee to Wise county, Texas between 1870 and 1880, changing their name from Garner to Rodgers. My great-grandfather, John, who was the oldest in the family seemed to be the only one of the children who ever told their children about the name change and the reason for the change. I guess it was because he was the reason for it. He said that he had killed two men and buried them in a fence row. Anyway, the whole family moved to wise county, Texas and were known after that as the Rodgers family. John told his children about the name change when he was an old man.

Elijah and Elizabeth are listed on the 1900 Census of Wise County, Texas: Rodgers, E, born 1817 or 18 TN, age 82 or 83. married 55 years(That would be 1845). Elizabeth is listed as being born February 1836 TN (she was, of course born in NC), age 64, Having given birth to 10 children, 9 of which are alive at that time.

John Robert Rodgers told his children and grandchildren that his real name was Garner and that they came from TN and changed their name because he had murdered two men there.
They probably moved to Texas about 1876 or 77. John Robert and Dica were married sometime early in 1878 as their twins were born in March of 1879.
Elijah is buried in Jonestown Cemetery, between Alvord and Decatur. The Cemetery is located beside the Mt. Zion Baptist Church a few miles off highway 81 to the Southwest. There is a small sign on the road with an arrow pointing down the road. There is a Place with lots of Hub Caps on the left and an iron gate going into a property on the right.
His wife is not buried beside him (She is buried in Tipton Cemetery, Tipton OK, Tillman County). she outlived him by several years and was living with her son William when she died.
There looks to be at least five more graves or grave spaces beside Elijah but no stones and no listing on the Cemetery book(but it is only grave stones not an official listing of who is buried there).

Notes for Elizabeth ?: Elizabeth appears in the 1900 Census of with her son William H. and daughter-in-law Margaret.
She is buried in the Tipton City Cemetery, Tipton, OK. She has no stone, however she did have one in 1983 when the Cemetery was canvasses by "some club ladies" as told to Ramona Wagnon by the lady at City Hall of Tipton in June of 2005.
Elizabeth appears with her husband Elijah in Wise County, TX in the 1900 Census. She is reported as being born in February of 1836. and in TN, her father in Va, her mother in NC. Every time before she is listed as being born in NC.
In 1910 she appears on the cenus of Tillman County, OK with her son William H. and his wife Margaret and children.
