John Finley died at his farm home near Greenfield, greene County, Illinois. some years ago, matching tombstones for Mary and John Finley wre found on a farm 4 miles west of the town of greenfield. a concrete floor was being poured for a barn and the tombstones were thrown into the soft mixture and completely covered with concrete.
John Finley was a farmer. for sometime he lived in the Old Tryon district of North and South carolina. After March in 1790 he and the Francis Miller family wre in the Pendleton(Old Ninety-Six0 district of south Carolina. about 1802 John Finley west "out west" to Roane County, Tennessee. he stayed here four years before joining the Miller family in Jassamine County, kentucky. He did not stay long in Kentucky. By 1807/08 he had pushed on to the Illinois Territory, settling in the Apple Creek Area. This area became Madison County in 1821, Greene County was formed from this part of Madison County. He had the heart of a true pioneer. he was known as "Fighting Jack." Pioneering was his way of life and he lived it well, having the respect of his fellow men. he served his community by operating a grist mill. he bought and sold land in Greene County. the deeds are on record at the County Court House in Carrollton. he left a will dated 28 February 1838 and filed for probate in greene County 26 February 1840. p78 - William Jones and John Finley arrived in 1806, and settled on the sand ridge east of Alton. They had come to Illinois a couple of years previous and had stopped for a time in Pope County. William Jones was a Baptist Preacher.
p82-3 - Citizens of the county in 1815. "List of persons subject to road labor" on the public road from Isom Gillham's ferry on the Mississippi to Indian Creek where the public road crosses said creek leading to Edwardsville: John Finley.
p477 - John Finley came from Virginia and settled here about the same time as Mr. Woods. He settled in section 20, but removed to Greene County, Illinois in an early day. he was one of the first justices of the peace in this part of the state having been appointed as such by gov. Edwards in 1810, when Illinois was one of the frontier territories. Jacob Linder and family came to the county and settled near the Finleys.

EVENTS BEFORE THE DEEP SNOW
p278 - very soon after Kinkaid's Point was settled, John Finley, better known, however, as "Fighting Jack," erected a horse mill south of the present site of Greenfield. Although very loosly constructed, it was a great convenience for the dwellers for many miles around. Men and boys visited this mill from beyond Carrollton, riding on the sacks of corn and leading horses enough to turn the mill. Strange as it may seem, this mill was supplied with neigher wheel nor cog. At an elevation of six feet from the ground, a number of arms were passed horizontally through the driving shaft. They were of equal length, and their outer ends were deeply notched for the reception of a rawhide band twisted like a rope. this was passed around the end of the arms or spokes, resting in the notches, and thence to the "trundle" being crossed, however, between the latter and the driving wheel, to prevent slipping. To the same shaft that carried the arms was attached a long lever, to which the horse or horses were fastened. This was all the gearing belinging to the mill, and from its great simplicity it was easily repaired when out of order. A few hickory withes usually secured any part that needed attention. John Finley and his son thomas afterward entered the site of the Rockbridge Mills. the old gentleman settled on the bluff south of the creek, and his son made a home in Taylor's Prairie, just north of Rockbridge.
He was married to Mary Beavers on 24 December 1781 in Botetourt County, Virginia. Mary Beavers was born on 30 December 1762 in virginia. She died on 4 February 1851 in Greene County, Illinois, at the home of her son, Thomas Finley, near Greenfield, Greene county, Illinois. After the death of her husband she lived for some time with her daughter, Mary(the wife of James Miller) near greenfield. The 1850 U.S. Population Census for Greene County gives her age as 89, but it seems she may have been somewhat younger. After her death the final settlement was made on the John Finley Estate. Thomas Finley was paid from the estate for her care. John Finley and Mary Beavers had 10 children.

Some say they were married in Mecklinburg Co., NC but Larry Gene Howard says that he has a pension request from IL where Mary states that she was married to John Finley in Botetourt Co., VA, on the date given. Larry also has a copy of John Finley's Will dated 1838 and found in Greene Co., IL.
