                                                            Generation No. 1.

George Raulston3 Ray (James2, Robert1) was born 09 Jun 1792 in Orange Co., NC, USA, and died 09 Sep 1883 in Sumner Co., TN, USA. He married Elizabeth Dycus 19 Nov 1812 in Jackson Co., TN, USA. She was born 19 Jan 1796 in England, and died Abt. 1850 in Simpson Co., KY, USA.

Notes for George Raulston Ray:

Geoge was of Scotch-Irish ancestors. He came with his parents to Jackson Co., TN around 1800 and settled on Wartrace Creek near Highland, TN, where he was granted a large tract of land known as the Old Horney Survey. It is believed that his parents are buried on Wartrace Creek.

Raulston Ray met and fell in love with Elizabeth Dycus, who came from England to live with a family as their maid. She was an indentured survant and was to work for this family for seven years in order to pay for her fare from England to America. After she had worked two years, Raulston paid the family for the remaining five years in order to marry Elizabeth.

They were married 19 November 1812 and reared their family on Wartrace Creek around Highland, TN. After some of their children were grown and married they moved to Simpson Co., KY with the younger children. they stayed there four years and during this time Elizabeth died. Raulston then moved to the thirteenth district of Sumner County, north of Portland, TN at Sengtown where he bought a large tract of land.

George Raulston is buried at the old homestead which in later years has been known as the George Ray place in sumner Co., TN. He had one hundred three grandchildren at the time of his death. This information was gathered in the 1940's from a large family Bible formerly belonging to Raulston Ray and at that time in the possession of George Ray.

                                                                    ********

The following was copied from the writing of Hampton Ray in regard to his father, Raulston Ray; the writing was in the hands of Raulston Ray's grandson, Mr. George Raulston Ray of Portland, Tennessee when the copy was made:

Raulston Ray departed this life on the 9th of September, 1883 at the residence of his son Hampton Ray in sumner county, Tennessee, after a painful illness of three months, at the age of 91 years and three months. He was born in Orange County, North Carolina, on the 7th day of June 1792 and emigrated with his parents to Jackson county, Tennessee.

About the year 1841 he professed Religion and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at the Camp Ground Jackson County, Tennessee. In the year 1849 he moved with his family to Simpson County, Kentucky and united with the Presbyterian church at Smyrna, Allen County, Kentucky, and when he moved back to the State of Tennessee, then it being so inconvenient to attend church at Smyrna(Smyrra) he removed his membership to Cold Springs in which church he lived a consistant member until it pleased the Great Head of the Church to remove him from this world to the Great Church Triumphant. he said from the beginning of his sickness that he would not recover and refused to take medicine and saying that if it were possible for him to recover from that attack it would not according to the lays of nature be long until he would have to pass through his last and final sickness. He always manifested a willingness to depart and be with Jesus which he said would be far better.

Thus he passed away leaving 8 children living, 109 grandchildren, 140 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren to mourn not as those having no hope for like Saint Paul he had fought the good fight, he had finished his course, he was ready to be offered.

So Father fare thee well, the present joy no mortal tongue can tell
for on your clear redeemers breast you seek repose and find your rest.

(Copied as nearly as possible as the original)

Notes for Riley Washington Hufhines:
I quote:

The Teel Graveyard is located in the 3rd Civil District of Jackson county, on Wartrace Creek, about 1/2 mile above the Camp Ground Methodist Church, also 12 miles West of Gainesboro. The land formerly owned by Adam Teel, who came from Virginia, or North Carolina soon after 1800. This farm was sold to his son, William Teel, who later sold same farm to Cornelius Carver, and moved to Texas.

Adam Teel and his wife are buried here and other members of the Teel family. There are many graves here, with only a few of them marked. Many slaves are buried in this graveyard, a few of their graves marked with a flat rock, but have no names or dates on them.

This land is now owned and cultivated by Walter Draper, his residence but a few yards from the above named graveyard.

It is located behind the house and beside the barnyard of Mr. McQue, who now owns the property whe we visited in 1990. Mr. McQue said that he had never heard it referred to as Teel Cemetery or any other name. It was just there when he bought the property. The Draper residence has been torn down and a new brick house built. The old barn is still there.

Riley has a tall monument with a poem carved on it. At that time we could not find the gravestone of Sarah, although in 1937 when Mrs. Maude McGlasson of Gainesboro, Tennessee canvased the Cemetery there was a stone on it.
